a national security threat

CAIRO — Egyptian authorities have warned that the use of the Internet by dissidents constitutes a threat to national security.

Egyptian Interior Minister Habib Al Adly said the opposition use of the Internet has damaged national security. Al Adly cited reports of police torture, which included the posting of a video of a torture session.

The ordeal of 21-year-old Emad el-Kabir has been something of a Rodney King moment, AP reported, "a sudden, stark glimpse of a reality which authorities routinely deny, but which human rights groups say is part of a pattern of police brutality."

"This is a very dangerous crime, a crime of which its victims include individuals, the state and its institutions," Al Adly said.

In a weekend interview on state-run Egyptian television, Al Adly did not specify bloggers. A 22-year-old blogger, Abdul Kareem Nabil, has been on trial for insulting Islam.

"I consider this to be an intended unpatriotic campaign to strike a national service that seeks stability in the country," Al Adly said.
