Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces commander Gen. Strategic Nikolai Solovtsov confirmed last week that Russia is developing a hypersonic strategic missile that flies at extremely high speeds just inside the atmosphere.

In the near future Russian would develop a “vectored motion” hypersonic missile, Solovtsov said.

The depressed trajectory long-range missile is being designed to defeat U.S. missile defenses.

The missile would be able to rapidly change trajectory and home in on different targets. The missile is expected to travel at speeds of more than Mach 6 or six times the speed of sound.

The Russian development is said to be in the early stages.
