China warns its military against online spies, 'Internet love traps'

China’s military last week warned that the foreign intelligence services are using the Internet to obtain intelligence through “online traps.”

The Liberation Daily newspaper, the official newspaper of the PLA, said there are many “illegal traps” used to deceive people in obtaining intelligence.

“Spies especially use the Internet to obtain intelligence information,” the July 17 report said. “Soldiers are not aware, careful or vigilant enough about this and can slip into Internet traps and secrets can be betrayed, bringing about harm to the military.”

One trap is to solicit people in search of “Internet love,” the report said.

“How can they suspect that their online ‘girlfriend’ who sticks to them like glue, will turn out to be a spy?” the report said.

“Furthermore, some spies seize upon young soldiers hearts and lure them into talking about military subjects, goading intelligence out of them. Some army research units have recent university graduate cadres and use the Internet as a new forum for expressing dissent, engaging in many debates, all the while in the trap of an enemy spy.”

Computers also are vulnerable to penetration by hacker-spies.

U.S. intelligence agencies, both civilian and military, have obtained valuable information on China’s military from the Internet, U.S. officials have said.
