ALGERIA KILLS AL QAIDA NO. 2
CAIRO — Algeria has reported the death of the No. 2 figure in the
new Al Qaida Organization in the Islamic Maghreb.
Algerian security sources said security forces killed Samir Saioud, also
known as Samir
Musab, about 40 kilometers east of Algiers. Musab was identified as the
deputy commander of the Al Qaida Organization for the Islamic Maghreb,
formerly the Salafist Brigade for Combat and Call.
In a statement on April 27, Algeria said Musab was killed in a clash
during the previous day. The statement said the gun battle took place in the
eastern province of Bourmerdes, and that the dead operative was identified
by his former colleagues.
In 2006, an estimated 300 Salafist operatives surrendered to authorities
under an Algerian amnesty offer. Officials said the former operatives have
helped in the military offensive against Al Qaida.
On Saturday, Algeria reported the killing of two suspected Al Qaida
operatives in Boumerdes. Security sources said one of the operatives has
been identified.
