RAMALLAH — The Fatah movement has fired at students and teachers to
enforce a strike of schools throughout the Palestinian Authority.
In Nablus, Fatah gunmen opened fire toward students who sought to attend
school in the northern West Bank city. A 12-year-old boy was shot in the
stomach and injured on Sept. 3, Middle East Newsline reported.
The strike by Palestinian teachers began on Sept. 2 in an effort by
Fatah to undermine the Hamas-led PA. Fatah has been organizing a general
strike in the PA to protest the failure to pay salaries to the 165,000
employees over the last four months.
Palestinian sources said several schools in the West Bank were closed by
force. The sources said the strike was successful.
Fatah and Hamas have failed in negotiations to form a national unity
government. Each has accused the other of demanding too many portfolios in
the proposed Cabinet.
