GAZA CITY — Palestinian sources said the Hamas-dominated Palestinian Authority has approved a command
that would consist of seven major insurgency groups. The sources said the
command would take responsibility for strikes against Israel.
On Monday, seven groups pledged to join the command. They included
Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees.
On Monday, Jihad's military wing, Al Quds Brigades, claimed to have
fired 56 missiles into Israel during April, Middle East Newsline reported. Jihad said most of the missiles
fell in the area of the Israeli city of Ashkelon, which contains strategic
facilities.
A statement issued by the groups said war against Israel would be
conducted jointly. The statement identified the command as the Operational
Military Group, designed to direct Palestinian strikes inside Israel.
Until now, Palestinian insurgency groups have claimed responsibility for
missile and other strikes against Israel. Palestinian sources said most of
the attacks were financed by Iran.
Israeli military sources said Hamas has been masterminding bombings and
missile strikes against Israel. The sources said Hamas directed the PRC in
the Gaza Strip to blow up the Karni cargo terminal in the eastern Gaza Strip
on April 26. The Palestinian Authority helped foil the attack.
