NICOSIA — Iran and Venezuela have pledged to build an oil refinery
in Syria.
The three countries have signed a memorandum of understanding to
construct an oil refinery in Syria in a project estimated at $1.5 billion.
The MoU, signed on Nov. 7 in Damascus, marked what officials described as
increasing energy and strategic cooperation with Syria.
Officials said a location has not been selected for the Syrian oil
refinery, meant to have a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day. They said the
facility would be located near Damascus.
Over the next few months, officials said, the three countries would
discuss financing for the project. This was the first time Venezuela has
given its commitment to participate in a major project in Syria. Both
countries are allies of Iran.
