LONDON — India is exploring prospects for energy cooperation with Israel.
The Indian government has proposed the use of an Israeli pipeline to
receive crude oil from the Central Asia and Caspian Sea region. Under the
proposal, India would import oil via Israel's 254-kilometer long
Eilot-Ashqelon pipeline, which could transport crude from the Mediterranean
to the Red Sea.
Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told a recent energy
conference that the oil would originate from the Caspian region via the new
1,764-kilometer Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan pipeline. Aiyar said the oil would reach
the Mediterranean Sea, and from there tankers would bring the oil to the
Ashkelon port, Middle East Newsline reported.
The minister said the oil would be sent through the pipeline to Eilat
before transport to India. Aiyar did not provide a timetable for the
project.
