NICOSIA — Russia plans to construct an oil refinery in Syria.
Syrian Oil Minister Ibrahim Haddad discussed the refinery proposal with
a Russian delegation. The Syrian news agency, SANA, reported that Russia's
Trans KazOil offered to build an oil refinery in Syria with a capacity
of 140,000 barrels per day.
SANA said Trans KazOil would submit a report that would examine the
economic feasibility of such a refinery, Middle East Newsline reported. The report envisions that Syria
would sell oil products in the region.
Russia and Syria have also discussed the development of the Banyas
refinery along the Mediterranean coast. Haddad said the refinery proposal by
Trans KazOil would cost $2 billion.
"The refinery will play an important role in developing the oil
manufacture in Syria and increasing petroleum products locally
manufactured," Haddad said.
