ABU DHABI — Saudi Aramco plans to develop the Moneefa oil field.
Saudi Aramco said development of Moneefa would begin in the first
quarter of 2007
with the first contracts awarded later this month. The statement said
Moneefa would add 900,000 barrels per day of Arab Heavy crude as well as 120
million cubic feet per day of natural gas by mid-2011.
Officials said Moneefa was part of an Oil Ministry plan to expand
production capacity from the current 11.3 million to 12.5 million barrels
per day, Middle East Newsline reported. They said the development of Moneefa
would require a 41-kilometer causeway, onshore oil and gas facilities as
well as deeper water offshore drilling facilities.
"The causeway is the critical first step for this project, as a
significant number of the Moneefa development's wells are in shallow
offshore areas that are not conducive to the traditional use of ocean
vessels to set up the jackets and platforms," Aramco said.
