LONDON — Iran has convened India and Pakistan to establish a natural
gas pipeline.
Iran has scheduled a meeting for Monday meant to discuss the supply of
gas to both India and Pakistan. The project, opposed by the United States,
has been estimated at $7 billion and meant to meet India's rising demand for
energy.
Officials said the meeting would discuss the price of Iranian gas, the
route of the pipeline as well as the division of the project. Iran has
proposed a 2,775-kilometer pipeline since 1996, Middle East Newsline reported.
Under the proposal, Pakistan would receive transit fees estimated at
hundreds of millions of dollars for permitting the gas flow to India. After
years of concern, India has agreed that the pipeline could move through the
territory of Pakistan, a longtime rival.
