CAIRO — Egypt plans to build what officials term one of the largest
oil refineries in the world.
Egyptian Oil Minister Sameh Fahmy said the refinery would have a
capacity of 500,000 barrels of oil per day. Fahmi said the facility would be
built with Arab investments.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti daily A-Siyassah on Dec. 23, Fahmy did
not say when or where the refinery would be constructed, Middle East Newsline reported. Fahmy, interviewed
on the sidelines of an energy conference in Kuwait, also did not identify
the Arab investors.
Egypt's largest refinery is located in Suez and contains a maximum
capacity of 146,300 barrels per day. The world's two largest refineries are
in South Korea, each with a capacity of more than 650,000 barrels per day.
