Insurgent attacks blamed for sharp drop in Iraq oil exports

BAGHDAD — Iraq oil exports have declined to their lowest level since mid-2003.

In December 2005, officials said, Iraqi oil exports dropped to 1.1 million barrels per day, Middle East Newsline reported. They said this was the lowest monthly figure since Iraqi oil exports resumed in May 2003.

Iraqi oil exports averaged 1.2 million barrels per day in November 2005. Officials said Sunni insurgency attacks have damaged pipelines and refineries.

The insurgency strikes have hampered plans to export up to three million barrels of Iraqi oil per day. Under the Saddam Hussein regime, Iraq exported between 1.8 million and 2.5 million barrels per day.
