IRAN RELEASES UAV RECON FOOTAGE
NICOSIA — For the first time, Iran has released video footage of
U.S. warships in the Gulf taken by indigenous unmanned aerial vehicles.
Iranian television broadcast footage from an unidentified indigenous
UAV. The one-minute footage was that of a U.S. aircraft carrier.
The UAV video broadcast by Iran's Al Alam television showed an aircraft
carrier stacked with war planes. The vessel was said to have been part of
the U.S. Navy fleet in the Gulf.
"A source in the Revolutionary Guard said the UAV carried out its
mission without U.S. fighter pilots reaching it," the television said.
The report said 10 videos were relayed by the UAV, but did not say when
the footage was shot. The videos were said to have provided "more precise
information and details about military equipment, foreign forces, and their
activities in the Persian Gulf."
The UAV footage was broadcast on Nov. 12 at the end of the "Great
Prophet" exercise. The exercise was designed to demonstrate Iran's military
capability, firepower and test new systems.
Iran has pledged to oppose the U.S. military presence in the Gulf. On
Monday, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Maj. Gen. Yahya
Rahim-Safavi warned that there would not be Gulf security without Iran.
