10-10 IRAN ARRESTS LEADING DISSIDENT CLERIC
NICOSIA — Iran has arrested a leading dissident cleric who appealed
for support from the West.
Iranian media have reported that authorities detained Ayatollah Mohammed
Kazemeini Borujerdi as part of a crackdown on dissident clerics. Borujerdi,
a harsh critic of the regime, has advocated the separation of state and
religion in Iran.
"We believe people have grown tired of political religion and they want
to return to traditional religion," Borujerdi said. "The objective of my
followers and me is in defending traditional religion."
Officials have confirmed the arrest in Teheran. They said that over the
weekend, police were confronted by hundreds of supporters of the ayatollah,
who wielded firebombs, swords and clubs.
"A person has gathered some naive people around to pledge donations and
have their wishes come true, which is a sheer lie and distortion of
religion," Brig. Gen. Nasser Shabani, deputy commander of the Teheran
police, said.
