Iran plans to institute gasoline rationing in an effort to
limit fuel imports.
Officials said the government has not yet decided whether to implement
the rationing plan. They said the arrangement, approved by parliament on
March 8, would be available in case of a cutoff of gasoline imports as part
of the U.S.-led campaign against Iran's nuclear program. Kuwait has been a
major gasoline supplier to Iran.
Parliament has approved a government plan to limit access to subsidized
gasoline. Under the plan, subsidized gasoline would be rationed through the
issuance of so-called smart cards, Middle East Newsline reported.
The rationing could begin in time for the new state fiscal year, which
begins on March 21. Officials said the smart card would record purchases of
subsidized fuel and require drivers to pay the full amount once they exceed
their limit.
