ABU DHABI — The United States is bracing for an Al Qaida
strike in Saudi Arabia.
Western diplomatic sources said intelligence intercepts over the last
few weeks pointed to an imminent Al Qaida strike in the Saudi kingdom. The
sources said the most likely target was Western facilities or embassies.
Last week, the State Department warned U.S. citizens against traveling
to the kingdom, Middle East Newsline reported. The department asserted that Islamic insurgents have
targeted hotels, housing compounds, transportation and businesses used by
Westerners.
The sources said that over the last two weeks the State Department has
severely restricted the movement of U.S. diplomats in Saudi Arabia. They
said diplomats were ordered not to leave their compounds, embassies or
consulates except for urgent business.
