WASHINGTON —- The Bush administration has named a new coordinator to supervise the
Palestinian security apparatus.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Keith Dayton has been nominated as U.S. security
coordinator to Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Dayton, who would be
promoted to a three star general, would oversee the development of PA
security forces as well as Israeli-PA security coordination and cooperation.
Dayton was appointed by President George Bush to replace Maj. Gen.
William Ward, who was in the post for less than a year. Ward oversaw the
unilateral Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank in
August 2005, Middle East Newsline reported.
Dayton has served as the director of strategy, plans and policy in the
U.S. Army's Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff.
On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Mofaz reported an increase in PA
security activity. Mofaz told the Israeli Cabinet that the PA has launched a
plan to impose order in the West Bank.
