ABU DHABI – Kuwait has captured an insurgent believed to head an Al Qaida-aligned network in the sheikdom.

Officials have identified Nasser Khalifa Al Unzari as the head of the Al Qaida network in Kuwait. They said Al Enezi headed the so-called Al Haramain Brigades in the sheikdom, believed connected to a similar network in neighboring Saudi Arabia.

An Interior Ministry statement said Al Enezi was captured during a raid by security forces in a neighborhood south of Kuwait City, Middle East Newsline reported. This was the fourth operation by Kuwaiti forces in about 10 days.

Al Enezi was captured on Monday during battles with police in which five people were killed south of Kuwait City. Four of the casualties were said to be operatives of Al Enezi.

Al Enezi was described as a former preacher in a Kuwait mosque who helped recruit youngsters for Al Qaida operations in Kuwait. He was also said to have trained recruits in attacks against Western interests in the sheikdom.

"This was a spectacular success," Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Adel Al Hashshash said.
