RAMALLAH — The Palestinian Authority has completed the largest military training course in its history.

The PA held a military ceremony for the graduation of 250 Palestinian cadets from throughout the PA territories. Officials said the cadets completed an advanced 45-day military training course in the West Bank town of Jericho.

The ceremony marked the completion of the first enhanced military training course. During the Dec. 6 ceremony, the cadets demonstrated a range of skills, including rappeling, jumping from moving cars and other urban warfare tactics.

The course was given by Palestinian instructors from Pakistan and Yemen, officials said. They said the course was hampered by a shortage of weapons.

All of the cadets who underwent the training course were members of the Fatah insurgency group Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. The PA has absorbed most of the 700 Al Aqsa fighters in the West Bank and offered others a monthly salary to end attacks on Israel.

PA police have received aid from Western donors. On Dec. 7, the PA and Norway signed an agreement estimated at $750,000 to assist PA police as part of a European Union initiative.

The head of the EU Police Mission for the PA, Jonathan McIvor, said 33 international advisers were working to help Palestinians increase their police capacity. The PA has a security force of about 60,000 and the EU and United States have sought a reduction of at least 25 percent.
