GAZA CITY – Palestinian insurgents, despite negotiations over a ceasefire accord, continue to strike Israeli targets.

Israeli and Palestinian sources report that insurgents have kept up mortar and rocket attacks against Israeli civilian targets in the Gaza Strip. They said the insurgents stem from the ruling Fatah movement, which over the weekend was said to have agreed to a ceasefire.

On Monday, Palestinian gunners fired mortars toward Israeli communities in the Gaza Strip. There were no reports of injuries.

A Fatah wing led by Ahmed Abu Rish claimed responsibility for the attacks. A statement said the gunners fired three mortars into the Israeli community of Atzmona in the southern Gaza Strip.

"The option of resistance would remain until forcing the Israeli occupation to get out of the occupied Palestinian lands," Abu Rish said in a statement.

Earlier, the Palestinian Authority asserted that Fatah had agreed to a ceasefire. PA officials said the agreement was in exchange for an Israeli pledge to reduce military operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

"They [insurgency factions] offered to halt operations against Israel for a few days," PA spokesman Ziyad Abu Amr said.

On Tuesday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia met to discuss establishment of a new PA government.
