Saudi Arabia plans to launch major energy projects by
2010.
Saudi officials said Saudi Aramco was preparing to start at least two
projects meant to increase oil production capacity. Officials said the
kingdom wants to increase capacity from the current 11 million to 15 million
barrels of oil per day.
Saudi Aramco now produces less than nine million
barrels of oil per day, Middle East Newsline reported.
One project called Khursaniyah is meant to develop Saudi Aramco's
Khurais oil field. Officials said production from Khurais would reach
500,000 barrels of oil per day in 2007. By 2009, they said, the field would
produce nearly 1 million barrels per day.
Saudi Aramco also planned to construct a refinery meant for the export
market. Officials said the company was discussing the issue with foreign
bidders.
