Libya and the United States are conducting high-level energy
cooperation talks.
The United States has been represented by Assistant Secretary of State
for Economic Affairs Paul Simmons in the talks which began on April 10. Simmon and
senior Libyan officials are discussing bilateral oil and gas development.
So far, Simmons has met with Libyan Energy Minister Fathi Bin Shatwan and
Economic and Trade Minister Abdul Qader Khair, Middle East Newsline reported. The talks were said to have
explored joint investments to develop Libya's oil industry.
In 2004, Libya awarded U.S. firms most of the oil exploration and
development contracts. Tripoli has designated the United States as its main
partner to increase Libyan oil production to three million barrels per day
by 2010.
