TEL AVIV — Israel's Arrow-2 missile defense system has
intercepted an intermediate-range missile resembling Iran's Shihab-3.
Israeli officials said an Arrow-2 missile, fired from an air force base
south of Tel Aviv, intercepted a target projectile over the Mediterranean
Sea on Friday in the first successful test against an Iran type missile.
The officials said the Black Sparrow target missile was meant
to simulate an Iranian Shihab-3 missile, with a range of more than 1,300
kilometers, Middle East Newsline reported.
This marked the first success of the Arrow-2 against a missile meant to
simulate the flight path of the Shihab-3. In the summer of 2004, the Arrow-2
failed to intercept a Shihab-3-type target in a test in the United States.
Officials said the interception marked a milestone for the Arrow-2
program and efforts to enhance the missile to counter intermediate-range
threats. They said the success would lead to full production of Arrow-2
interceptors in the United States in a project led by Boeing.
