Fourth nominee by Ahmadinejad named oil minister

After more than six months, Iran has an oil minister.

Parliament has approved the fourth nominee for oil minister after rejection of three previous candidates submitted by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. On Sunday, Kazem Vaziri Mahaneh, acting oil minister since September, received 172 votes from 259 deputies in attendance.

Parliamentarians said Mahaneh was the first of the four nominees to have genuine experience in his field, Middle East Newsline reported. The other candidates were dismissed as colleagues of Ahmadinejad from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The approval of Mahaneh was expected to resume efforts to advance crude oil and natural gas projects in Iran. Foreign energy companies had complained that the absence of an oil minister had effectively blocked major programs and awards.
