Iran has briefed Russia on plans to build 20 nuclear plants to generate electricity.

Officials said in the first stage Teheran would construct six nuclear power reactors.

"A plan has been approved in parliament obliging the government to study the possibility of building 20 nuclear power stations," Kazem Jalali, chairman of parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said. "Various countries, including Russia, can participate and we hope Russia will continue to cooperate with us on this question."

Jalali said the 20 nuclear reactors would be built in Iran in the coming years, Middle East Newsline reported. He did not elaborate.

"It is economical for Iran to produce nuclear fuel needed by these power plants," Jalali said.

The parliamentarian urged Moscow to complete the Bushehr nuclear power plant and supply it with nuclear fuel on schedule. He said Iran's nuclear programs would be conducted in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Another Iranian parliamentarian chairman asserted that Teheran would soon resume the enrichment of uranium. Iran agreed to suspend uranium enrichment as part of a deal with the European Union.

"Previously there were many ambiguities in Iran's case, but today many of the ambiguities have been removed," Alaeddin Borujerdi, chairman of parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, said. "Therefore, more than ever, the conditions have been prepared so that we can once again resume our activities under the [International Atomic Energy] Agency's regulations."
