 Lev Navrozov emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1972 He settled in New York City where he quickly learned that there was no market for his eloquent and powerful English language attacks on the Soviet Union. To this day, he writes without fear or favor or the conventions of polite society. He chaired the "Alternative to the New York Times Committee" in 1980, challenged the editors of the New York Times to a debate (which they declined) and became a columnist for the New York City Tribune. Last month we saw a CNN program about Hitler, based on new data, discovered of late.
I do not see how this program differed from the conformities in the democratic West in the past 75 years or so.
What was a strong conformity before 1939?
Even the Liberal (not Conservative!) Lloyd George said in his letter that he would like to see a great man like Hitler at the head of the British government. Randolph, Churchill's son, was a reporter in a German election campaign, and when Hitler's party won a plurality of votes, he sent his congratulations to Hitler.
What was the conformity after 1945?
Hitler was represented in the democratic West and in Russia as the villain of a melodrama, that is, as a madman who yelled hysterically and killed millions of civilians out of his madness, malice, and hatred.
Actually, Hitler before 1918 had been a nice man. There is a volume of evidence that he had liked Jews. Why? He had been much like one of German Jews of his time—an outcast without college education but reading serious books in libraries, fond of political discussions, painting, dreaming of becoming a great artist, and knowing all of Wagner (and a great deal of Beethoven) by heart. He had been polite, well-mannered, modest, quiet, and avoiding all brawls and physical violence. During the “Great War,” he was a medical orderly.
He was 29 when the “Great War” was over. Under the Treaty of Versailles, the victorious Allies forbade Germany to have any armed forces to speak of. The only drawback of this arrangement was that Germany was virtually defenseless to Lenin's and later Stalin's “liberation,” especially if supported by the German Communist Party from within. One reason this arrangement was that the Western Left considered Lenin and Stalin as part of the Left, and Wilhelm II or Hitler as part of the Right, and hence were sure that Lenin or Stalin could not be as evil as Wilhelm II or Hitler.
But the German middle class knew better. In the early 1930s Stalin began the “liquidation” of successful farmers and small businessmen. The massacre was filmed as a great victory of socialism over capitalism. When Goebbels showed these Soviet newsreels in Germany, the German middle class was horrified: this is what awaited them, if Stalin occupied the virtually defenseless Germany with the aid of the German Communist Party.
Who was to blame for this plague, called Communism? Alfred Rosenberg, a Russian German who emigrated from Soviet Russia to Germany, suggested to Hitler: Jews. According to Rosenberg, Hitler was to become an anti-Semite in order to “attract the masses.”
Who could save the mortally endangered German middle class? The man who could and would challenge the Allies and abolish the Treaty of Versailles. His name was Hitler. Have you heard him speaking?
The films showing Hitler speaking have been shown in the United States in the past half century or so as proof that he was insane — the screaming insane villain from the melodrama. But to the German middle class they proved that he was the only person capable and willing to save the mortally endangered German middle class.
The German language seems to the English speaking shrill, gutteral, explosive. But to the German middle class, Hitler's German seemed to convey his fearless will to abolish the Treaty of Versailles and save them from Stalin's liquidation. Well, the music of Beethoven and Wagner seems to many outside Germany a deafening roar, but to Hitler it was a music of genius.
He could not play any instrument. But having heard Wagner's opera seventeen times he could whistle it from the first to the last sound, without a single false note. He would compose his speech as Beethoven's four-part symphony (like “Eroica”), with a thunderous triumphant “Finale,” the end of which would be drowned in the ecstatic roar of the audience. Yes, he WAS the hero, able to defend them against Stalin's liquidation”!
Having gained absolute power, the nice, gentle, modest young man became absolutely evil. It has been justly said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. For him, life was now so many precipices, and he could jump into any of them. Do you want to be the owner of the world? Just jump, and you will fly to your ownership of the world—or will fall to your suicide.
Most or many Western post-WW2 historians put the cause and effect upside down: Hitler was so (genetically?) insane/evil that he seized absolute power and perpetrated horrible mega-crimes. What Hitler had been before his age of 29 is not considered. As though Hitler had been so nice to Jews (including the Jewish doctor of the Hitlers) just to trick mankind. But his REAL nature was his annihilation of six million Jews.
However, this absolutely evil crime began only in 1942, during his flight to his ownership of the world or his fall to his suicide. After his defeat at Moscow in the winter o 1941/42, he began justly to suspect that his subordinates would betray him to the Anglo-Americans to save their own skins.
He took his way of protecting himself from the criminal world. The head of a criminal gang implicates all members of it in a crime so heinous that none of them can expect mercy even if they betray their chief. The annihilation of six million Jews was another precipice of absolute power, and he jumped into it because after the winter of 1941/42, he was, in his own opinion, not flying to the ownership of the world, but falling to his suicide.
Those who did not want to abolish the Treaty of Versailles, not Hitler's insanity (alleged on the basis of his German way he spoke publicly) that created Hitler's absolute power and hence the precipices of his absolutely evil crimes into which he jumped.
