Venezuela’s leftist government is training communist rebels in Ecuador, according to an Ecuadorian military intelligence report.

The El Comercio newspaper reported that the Alfarist Liberation Army has been operating since 2001.

The four-page report said a new subversive group was germinating in Ecuador and that certain of its members had sporadic contacts with members of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and had received training in Venezuela.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez denied the reports.

According to the report in the Ecuador newspaper, Venezuelans are behind a military link with the group in Ecuador.

Rene Vargas of the Pro-Bolivarian Movement indicated that the tie had been proposed. "The military are on the trail of the ELA, which is presumed to be linked to Alfarist Bolivarian organizations," he said.

Another report stated that FARC terrorist Rodrigo Granda was hiding in Ecuador.

"An armed group called the ELA has begun activities and its leaders are receiving strategic and military training from the FARC at a hacienda in north Ecuador,” the report said.
