U.S. forces have acquired a range of volunteers to help patrol the Iraqi capital. The U.S. military has restored mid-level commanders to supervise the force.

Iraqi police chief Col. Abdul Ghafour has been restored to his post. He told the Arabiya satellite channel that negotiations are being held with the United States for the resumption of police services.

Ghafour said he wants his forces to be given weapons to deal with rioters and looters. So far, the United States has not responded.
