SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM

Iraq has reached a production level of 1 million barrels of oil per day.

U.S. officials said the oil production reached the 1 million-barrels-per-day mark earlier this month.

They also said Iraq has begun to export oil but did not provide a figure.

"Oil production is well on the way," Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the head of the U.S. military in Iraq, said. "The 1 million barrel-per-day mark has already been achieved and oil exports have begun."

On Thursday, Massoud Barazani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and a member of the Iraqi Interim Governing Council called for the extension of the United Nations oil-for-food program. The program expires on Nov. 21.
