The United States plans to deploy thousands of
additional troops in Kuwait over the next three months.
U.S. officials said the Defense Department has drafted a plan to send at
least 3,000 soldiers to Kuwait in July and August. The soldiers would
bolster the current force of nearly 5,000 troops in the sheikdom.
The U.S. military has already laid the groundwork for the additional
forces. Officials said the U.S. Third Army has moved its headquarters to
Kuwait and is responsible for logistics and supplies.
The officials said the U.S. force in Kuwait has been exercising with the
sheikdom's military as well as on its own. They said the new U.S. contingent
would also undergo intensive training after their arrival.
U.S. Central Command has expanded a military base near the Kuwaiti
border with Iraq. The base is said to contain troops as well as aircraft.
