AMMAN Ñ Jordan's military is said to have halted what officials
termed were plans to launch a massive Islamic attack on the Israeli embassy.
Jordanian troops and police blocked thousands of demonstrators from
heading toward the Israeli embassy on Friday. Scores of people were arrested
in the ensuing clash.
Security officers found firebombs, automatic weapons and hand grenades
on some of those detained. Jordanian sources said the weapons were meant for
use against the Israelis.
Jordan has banned anti-Israeli demonstrations in the kingdom. But
Islamic opposition groups, which control the major trade unions, have
ignored the prohibition.
On Friday, troops and police surrounded an area around the embassy. They
confronted thousands of protesters who left four mosques in Amman following
prayers.
