JERUSALEM Ñ Israel has come under attack by Palestinian and Shi'ite
insurgents during the visit by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.
A Palestinian suicide bomber blew herself up in Jerusalem's market place
on Friday, killing six Israelis and injuring another 90. The Fatah-led Al
Aqsa Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.
At the same time, Hizbullah gunners fired mortars and anti-tank missiles
toward Israeli military positions in the Shebaa plateau along the Lebanese
border. Israeli artillery and air force jets responded with strikes in
southern Lebanon.
The attacks took place hours after Powell met Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon in Jerusalem. Powell is scheduled to meet Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat on Saturday in Ramallah. White House spokesman Ari
Fleischer said that despite the attacks on Israel Powell will not cancel his
meeting with Arafat.
