WASHINGTON Ñ Iran is constructing at least two facilities
to help construct and assemble nuclear weapons.
Iranian opposition sources said the Teheran regime is building two
nuclear weapons facilities in central Iran south of Teheran, Middle East Newsline reported.
Western intelligence sources confirmed that Teheran is constructing the
two facilities. They said the facilities are part of a secret nuclear
infrastructure that will be staffed with scientists and technicians from the
former Soviet Union. Russia has also trained more than 700 Iranian
scientists to work in the nuclear field.
One facility is
a nuclear fuel production plant at Nantaz. The facility will also contain a
research laboratory.
The second facility is a heavy water production plant and is located in
Arak. Both facilities are said to be close to completion.
"These two nuclear sites have been kept secret until now," Alireza
Jafarzadeh, a representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran,
told a news conference on Wednesday.
Jafarzadeh said the Arak facility will be used to support nuclear
reactors planned by Iran. Iran has been negotiating with Russia for the
construction of up to six nuclear reactors. The first facility is near
completion near the Gulf city of Bushehr.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran is on a State Department list
of groups deemed terrorist. The determination has been fought by a lobby in
Congress, which argued that the council supports the establishment of a
democratic regime in Teheran.
