ABU DHABI Ñ Oman reports the discovery of a new major oil reserve.
Officials said a new oil discovery at Dafaq in southern Oman could
contain up to 40 million barrels of oil. The discovery took place earlier
this year as part of exploration in the sultanate, according to Middle East Newsline.
A statement by Petroleum Development Oman said the discovery at Dafaq
was part of the sultanate's efforts to increase its oil and natural gas
reserves. The company said that in 2001 Oman added 151 million barrels of
oil to its reserves.
The statement said Oman was also hiring more nationals to help run its
energy industry. PDO said it spends $21 million to train Omanis to work in
the industry.
"By the end of 2001, the companyÕs Omanisation rate was 82 percent and
this would reach 100 percent by the year 2007," the statement said.
