ANKARA Ñ Turkey has launched a $3.4 billion project to connect a natural gas pipeline to Russia.

Officials said ground was broken last week for the construction of two pipelines that would reach Russia through the Black Sea. The project for the 376 kilometer undersea pipeline is being led by the Italian company, Saipem. The pipeline Ñ which incurred initial disapproval from the United States Ñ begins at the Turkish port of Samsun and will stretch to the Russian port of Dzhubga. Executives said the first pipeline will be completed by the end of the year. The second will be completed in 2002.

At that point, Russia will begin pumping gas to Turkey. Initial delivery will be about three billion cubic meters a year.
