AMMAN Ñ Jordan is considering the deployment of troops in the
U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
Jordan's King Abdullah said his country is examining the issue as part
of increasing Amman's role in the war against terrorism. Abdullah supported
the military offensive against the Afghan ruling Taliban movement and Saudi
fugitive Osama Bin Laden.
The king, who had been a target for Bin Laden assassins, expressed
support for continuation of the war during the Muslim
fast month of Ramadan. Ramadan is expected to begin later this week.
"What we are facing is unfortunately those that have hijacked Islam for
their own destructive ends," Abdullah said. "This is a battle not between
moderate Muslims and extremist Muslims, because there is no such thing as
moderate Muslims."
Abdullah returned to Amman on late Saturday from talks in London with
British leaders regarding the war in Afghanistan. Diplomatic sources said
Britain and the
United States have asked Amman to participate in military operations in
Afghanistan.
"There is a military dimension, which must be exercised with caution,
but always with unflinching resolve," Abdullah told the British parliament.
"An even more important role is, and will be, played by other means øø
economic measures, diplomacy, and the free flow of truth."
