WASHINGTON — Saudi Arabia will hold its first discussion with the
Bush administration over the kingdom's plans for oil production and energy
development.
The discussion takes place Thursday during a visit by Saudi Oil Minister
Ali Naimi. Naimi is expected to meet U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham.
Officials said the two men will discuss world oil prices amid continued
cuts in production by Riyad and other OPEC members. The administration also
plans to urge Riyad to provide U.S. companies with opportunities to win huge
contracts for the development of Saudi natural gas.
Earlier, a prominent advisory panel urged the administration to lower
its profile in the attempt to reduce world oil prices. Energy officials have
warned of skyrocketing prices over the summer unless output is significantly
increased.
Abraham is expected to meet other OPEC members when he embarks on a tour
of the Gulf over the weekend. The secretary will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar
and Kuwait.
