Palestinians on uncertain ground with Bush administration

GAZA — The Palestinian Authority appears to have ruled out the prospect of a high-level meeting with the Bush administration.

PA officials played down reports that PLO Executive Committee secretary Mahmoud Abbas would meet senior U.S. officials. Abbas was to have gone to the United States for medical treatment and PA sources said he was expected to meet with administration officials.

Abbas, however, said the reports are rumors. But he did not rule out an eventual meeting with U.S. officials.

"There are no plans in the near future for meetings between American and Palestinian officials," Abbas said. "I'm in Ramallah, and I haven't gone to Washington until now but this does not mean that I won't go in future."

Abbas chaired a meeting of the PLO Executive Committee on Tuesday night.

PA Chairman Yasser Arafat briefed the panel on the Arab League summit in Amman and an Egyptian-Jordanian peace proposal.
