GAZA — An Israeli farmer kidnapped by a Palestinian squad has been
found dead in the Gaza Strip.
Roni Salah, 30, was found on Monday in an onion field near Khan Yunis
hours after he was kidnapped from the Jewish settlement of Kfar Yam. Salah
was taken from a greenhouse in the settlement and his car was later found
torched in Khan Yunis.
The Islamic opposition group Hamas claimed responsibility for Salah's
death. Later, a group aligned with the Fatah movement loyal to Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat claimed responsibility.
Israeli troops and helicopters conducted a search for Salah overnight
Monday. The PA was said to have participated in the
search, but sources said PA police director-general Brig. Gen. Ghazi Jabali
knew of the location of Salah during his abduction.
Earlier, Israeli troops closed roads in the southern Gaza Strip as
officials warned the Palestinians not to harm the abducted Israeli.
The killing prompted a cancellation of plans for a meeting between
Israeli and PA officials to discuss the prospect of a peace settlement.
Fighting was also reported in several areas of the Gaza Strip overnight
Monday as well as on the outskirts of Jerusalem.
On Monday, an Israeli was injured in a Palestinian ambush of a convoy
near the Jewish settlement of Elon Moreh outside the West Bank city of
Nablus.
