NICOSIA — Iran plans a major naval exercise in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Iranian officials said the Unity-80 exercise begins on Friday and will last five days. The maneuvers will comprise three stages.

Navy commander Rear Admiral Abbas Mohtaj said the navy will test weapons, electronic systems and conduct commando operations. Mohtaj said the exercise will also test war tactics and the movement of warships.

Three Iranian submarines bought from Russia will participate in the exercise, the naval commander said. He said naval vessels will move through Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea.
