Egypt hosts nuclear energy conference

CAIRO Ñ Egypt hosts an international nuclear energy conference amid
plans by Cairo to build at least one new reactor.
The conference sponsored by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy
Agency begins on Monday. The conference will last two days and include an
exhibition on nuclear equipment.
Egyptian Electricity Minister Ali Saidi will open the conference,
cosponsored by the Egyptian Nuclear Energy Agency. Officials said 300
scientists will gather and many of them have presented research papers on
the use of small- and medium-size nuclear reactors.
Egypt intends to expand its nuclear industry. Cairo has been obtaining
aid from Argentina and has launched talks with Russia for systems for a
nuclear reactor.
