TOKYO — South Korea plans to procure Russian jets and helicopters to
help offset a $1.8 billion debt owed by Moscow.
Officials said the issue was discussed in current talks in Seoul between
Russian and South Korean defense officials. The current round of talks is
scheduled to end on Friday.
"During the four-day session, Korea will review information given by
Russia over the latter's arms capability and integrated logistics support,"
South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yoon Il-Young said.
So far, officials said, Seoul is considering the purchase of transport
aircraft, refueling planes, jet trainers and hovercraft. In all, South Korea
is preparing to order $500 million worth of Russian systems. They said no
decisions will be made before the end of the year.
In March, a South Korean delegation will tour Russian defense plants to
review weapons being offered by Moscow. Last year, Seoul rejected a Russian
submarine offer because the vessel did not meet South Korean standards.
Russia has so far given Seoul helicopters worth $366 million Moscow
still owes Seoul $1.8 billion.
