NICOSIA -- Greek sources report that crates of Russian-made
S-300 ground-to-air missiles remain in storage on the Island of Crete
after Russian technicians and experts failed to appear to deploy them.
Greek Cypriot military officials intended to deploy the missiles on
the Island of Cyprus but Ankara refused to allow the deployment, saying
they were a direct threat to Turkey.
The missiles were then sent to Crete.
According to a report in the Greek newspaper "To Vima", the Russian
technicians and experts expected to arrive in Crete to deploy the
missiles who had previously
assumed operational responsibility for the S-300 missiles, didn't
arrive.
