TEL AVIV — Israel's military has become the latest target in the
raging cyberwar in the Middle East.
Israeli defense sources said the Israel Defense Forces website has been
the target of an electronic attack by Arab hackers. The sources said the
hackers inundated the site with tens of thousands of E-mail messages in an
attempt to damage the site.
The service provider for the website was temporarily paralyzed, the
sources said. But Netvision, the provider, reinforced its firewall and saved
the site from a crash.
Arab and Israeli hackers have been waging a war to penetrate and torpedo
government and official web sites. So far, efforts have been reported
against Egypt, Israeli, Lebanese, Jordanian and Palestinian web sites.
Israeli defense sources said that so far the hacking has done little
damage and is being conducted by amateurs rather than by governments. They
said Israel has invested huge amounts of money to protect vital computer
systems, which are not connected to the Internet.
