Trump’s ‘major announcement’: Digital trading cards and a counter-propaganda strike

Analysis by WorldTribune Staff, December 15, 2022

The last time Donald J Trump said he would make a “major announcement,” he followed it up by confirming his third run for the White House.

The former president is quite adept at drawing interest when he teases such announcements. So it was no surprise that when he said on Wednesday “America needs a superhero” in previewing a “major announcement” for Thursday, it garnered plenty of interest.

What dropped was more marketing ploy than “major announcement” as Trump said he would be offering an NFT digital trading card with an image of himself in a superhero costume standing in a boxing ring.

The Trump card will put fans out $99.

“They will be gone, I believe, very quickly!” Trump, author of ‘Art of the Deal’ wrote on Truth Social.

But there may be more than commerce motivating his announcement. Trump continues to mount the only significant offensive against a massive social-corporate media assault that has been unrelenting since 2015. His superhero physique and attire counter both Joe Biden’s weak image and conservative media efforts that since the November midterms have presented him as a spent force.

A link to the collectibles shows Trump in a number of different costumes — including a cowboy and an astronaut.

In a video ad for the cards, Trump began: “Hello everyone this is Donald Trump — hopefully your favorite president of all time, better than Lincoln, better than Washington, with an important announcement to make. I’m doing my first official Donald J. Trump NFT collection.”

Each card allegedly enters the purchaser into a raffle where they could score dinner with the former president, a golf trip, or a Zoom call with him.

“Buy one and you will join a very exclusive community,” Trump said.
