The Trump administration on Wednesday designated several Mexican drug cartels and the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua as terrorist organizations.
Adding them to the list of recognized terrorist organizations opens the cartels and gangs up for financial sanctions.
The Mexican cartels are: Cartel de Sinaloa, Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, Carteles Unidos, Cartel del Noreste, Cartel del Golfo, and La Nueva Familia Michoacana.
The international gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) is also now a foreign terrorist organization.
In signing the designation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: “The intent of designating these cartels and transnational organizations as terrorists is to protect our nation, the American people, and our hemisphere. That means stopping the campaigns of violence and terror by these vicious groups both in the United States and internationally. These designations provide law enforcement additional tools to stop these groups.
“Terrorist designations play a critical role in our fight against terrorism and are an effective way to curtail support for terrorist activities. Today’s actions taken by the State Department demonstrate the Trump Administration’s commitment to protecting our national security interests and dismantling these dangerous organizations.”
Also on Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order which directs all federal agencies to scrub their regulations and spending programs to ensure illegal migrants are not receiving taxpayers’ funds via hidden channels.
The order, titled “Preserving Federal Benefits for American Citizens”, calls on investigators to find the aid programs, change policies to stop funding to illegals, fend off expected lawsuits from the Left, and rewrite regulations to stop more funding.
The Biden-Harris administration “gave billions in taxpayer dollars to left-wing groups that facilitated mass illegal migration and provided legal services to challenge deportation orders,” said a White House fact sheet on the order.
The fact sheet said:
The surge in illegal immigration, enabled by the previous Administration, is siphoning dollars and essential services from American citizens while state and local budgets grow increasingly strained.
According to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), providing welfare to one million illegal aliens could cost American taxpayers an additional $3 billion annually.
The U.S. House Homeland Security Committee estimated that taxpayers could pay as much as $451 billion to care for [roughly 9 million] illegal aliens and gotaways that have entered the United States unlawfully since January 2021.
Democrats are expected to “furiously protest Trump’s aid cutoff because the cash flows through their vast and vital farm teams of supporters at government agencies and non-profits,” Breitbart’s Neil Munro noted. “Democrats also support the funding because it attracts migrants to the United States. The aid also deters them from going home by anchoring them to U.S. society via subsidized jobs, housing, schooling, government credentials, and political support.”
Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), said in a statement: “Today’s action by the Trump administration will save American taxpayers billions of dollars a year as every federal agency and department will be required to identify all federally funded programs currently providing any benefits to illegal aliens and take corrective action.”
