Panic in D.C.: Jobless claims spike, search engine boom (‘BleachBit,’ ‘wipe hard drive,’ ‘offshore bank’)

As the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) meticulously scans the books of federal agencies, panicked swamp inhabitants are reportedly deluging search engines inquiring about such things as “BleachBit,” “wipe hard drive,” and “offshore bank.”

WikiLeaks noted in a post to X on Thursday: “Washington DC searches soar for ‘Swiss bank’ (yellow), ‘offshore bank’ (green), ‘wire money’ (red) and ‘IBAN’ (blue).”

Search terms “wipe” (blue) and “erase” (red) also moved significantly higher as President Donald Trump’s administration took hold.

The search terms “BleachBit” and “wipe hard drive” have gone parabolic, WikiLeaks noted.

“Statute of limitations” is also a hot search topic in DC.

Zero Hedge noted: “Earlier this week, internet search trends for ‘Criminal Defense Lawyer’ and ‘RICO Laws’ went viral on X, fueling speculation that Washington’s political elites were in panic mode. The searches coincided with DOGE’s efforts to neuter USAID’s funding of NGOs that propped up a shadow government, as well as begin cutting tens of thousands of workers from various federal agencies.”

Meanwhile, since Jan. 20, nearly 4,000 workers in DC have filed for unemployment insurance, according to Labor Department data.

In all, just shy of 7,000 claims have been filed in the six weeks of the new year, or about 55% more than in the prior six-week period. Filings rose to 1,780 for the week ending Feb. 8, a 36% increase from the prior week and more than four times around the same period in 2024.

At the same time, the total level of claims nationwide has barely moved, with the four-week average of initial claims at 216,000, little changed from the beginning of the year and actually trending lower.

There are about 2.4 million federal workers, excluding post office employees, with nearly one-fifth employed in the DC area.

Draining the swamp has also led to an increase in active home listings in the DC area.

Last month, local residential markets in DC and surrounding counties in Northern Virginia and Maryland saw a sharp increase in active listings, averaging 22.8%.

Falls Church City, Virginia, experienced a 78.6% surge, followed by a 68.8% jump in Fairfax City, a 50.5% increase in Alexandria City, and a 33.5% uptick in Montgomery County, Maryland.

“These markets have a high concentration of federal workers, many of whom have spent their entire careers in the government with little to no experience in the private sector,” Zero Hedge noted.

Trump and Elon Musk’s DOGE have thus far eliminated 275,000 federal workers. This includes 75,000 who accepted the buyout and 200,000 workers on probation—those who have been in their roles for less than a year or, in some cases, up to two years.

In Maryland, Zero Hedge noted, “swamp draining by Trump and DOGE could push the state on a crash course to a ‘deep recession’ because of the already dire fiscal situation produced by far-left Democratic lawmakers, including Gov. Wes Moore. A large asset management company that operates in the region told us weeks ago that the financial situation in Maryland is so dire that they don’t even recommend the state’s muni bonds to their clients — and have instructed some clients to leave the state because of tax hike fears.”

Zero Hedge added: “What may unfold is an economic downturn that could rip through the unaccountable federal bureaucracy in the DC Swamp that won’t get a bailout this time from taxpayers.”
