Xi Jinping’s track record thus far establishes him as mainly a military strongman

President and commander-in-chief Xi Jinping has bolstered his hold over the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) by promoting six officers to the rank of full general on the eve of August 1, China’s Army Day.

Two of the six, the commanders of the Nanjing and the Guangzhou Military Regions (MR), respectively Gen. Cai Yingting and Gen. Xu Fenlin, are considered to be rising stars in the world’s largest fighting force.

Since becoming Chairman of the policy-setting Central Military Commission at the 18th Communist Party Congress last November, Xi has raised seven lieutenant-generals to the army’s highest rank.
