President Xi Jinping has invited Eric Chu, Chairman of Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT, or the Nationalists) Party for a “historic handshake” in Beijing early next month on May 4.

This will be the second time since 1949 that the heads of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the KMT hold a tete-a-tete to demonstrate significantly improved ties across the Taiwan Strait.
The meeting follows a partial revision in Beijing’s policy toward Taiwan.
At a major internal meeting on cross-Strait relations, Xi, who heads the CCP’s policy-setting Central Leading Group on Taiwan Affairs, pointed out that more emphasis should be put on wooing medium-sized enterprises, “the middle and lower classes,” residents in central and southern Taiwan, as well as Taiwan youths.
